Mambo to Hip Hop Trailer
Unfortunately, compared to the massive amount of video available on salsa, it's extremely difficult to find much on bugalú at all. This trailer, for a PBS documentary by Henry Chalfant, doesn't dwell specifically on bugalu but it does show the evolution of the Nuyorican cultural scene in NYC during that era and thus, provides a solid background to understanding the community from which bugalú emerges.
Fruko Y Sus Tesos: Sale El Boogaloo
Apart from Peru, the bugalu was also a big hit in the Colombian Latin scene. This more recent tune, by one of the biggest names in Colombia music, Fruko Y Sus Tesos, highlights one of the many variations on how to dance the boogaloo. Caliente!
Joe Bataan in San Francisco, 9/05
Bataan was a bugalu legend barely into his 20s and then rode through the salsa era of the '70s. However, from the early 1980s, through the next 20 years, Bataan effectively retired himself from the music world, only to come thundering back in the last few years. This 2005 performance - his first San Francisco engagement since 1975 - shows how powerful a presence he's still able to exert as a performer and the continuing importance he plays as a Latin music ambassador.
